Actual Licensing Position (ALP) Service
An Essential Step For Licensing Compliance
An ALP from the Teksys Software Asset Management (SAM) team enables your organisation to initiate its software compliance programme in a quick and cost effective manner. The Actual Licensing Position (ALP) takes into account usage, volume licenses and paper licenses with all upgrades applied. More simply, it is a comparison of software installed and licenses owned - but this can be a hugely time consuming and complex process for many organisations. The ALP service provided by Teksys is the most effective tool to ensure compliance with vendorís licensing agreements and avoid the potential cost and disruption of a compulsory vendor-initiated audit.
The ALP service can be performed individually or collectively across a range of software vendors product sets including:

How is an ALP produced?
To produce an ALP, we will require access to your inventory data, paper licenses and vendor reports. There is rarely a direct relationship between a license and a software installation and using our knowledge of upgrade paths and technology entitlements, the exact software license position is established across all required software vendors product sets. The end result is a detailed report of software deployed and licenses held, providing you with the information and tools to become compliant. Read more
The Process
1 - Inventory Data
Obtaining this data is the first step of the ALP process. Teksys can help determine accurate inventory data by using software monitoring agents or tools deployed on the network. The benefit of such a tool is to provide you with the knowledge to deploy only the applications which your users truly require and de-install those not utilised - thus providing ongoing SAM benefits after the ALP work is completed.
2 - Paper License Audit
Most businesses acquire software outside their volume licensing agreements in the form of either OEM licenses (procured with hardware) or full boxed products. Obtaining complete details of these licenses is essential to complete an accurate ALP. Teksys will manage this process and verify the data collated to ensure accuracy.
3 - Volume Licensing Database
With your authority, Teksys will access all volume licensing data held by the vendors and complete the licensing analysis. The details held by vendors provide a historic picture of licenses procured under an agreement but they may not be representative of your organisation's current situation. Read more
The ALP Report
At the end of the process you will receive a detailed report containing:
ï Current software usage patterns
ï Analysis of paper/full box/OEM licenses
ï Volume agreement entitlements
ï Entitlement versus liability analysis
ï Suggested over/under licensing remediation
Once in possession of this information, Teksys will advise on the most cost effective and appropriate methods to deal with any remediation work. Our experience has shown that in almost 75% of engagements, there is significant over-licensing in some areas resulting in a dramatic cost saving at contract renewal or project deployment. Read more
Ongoing Baseline Management
Whilst the ALP gives you a 'snapshot' of your licensing position, it is important that organisations are able to take ongoing control of their software assets. Teksys will assist with ongoing software management by implementing policy and process changes through a bespoke Process, Policy and Awareness workshop. The follow up report from the workshop not only gives a series of SAM recommendations but also details how your existing approach measures up against the recently released ISO 19770-1 standard.
